Assemblies — The Lost Moments We Never Get Back

Guest: Geetika Goyal

Welcome to Lab to Ed Leadership the podcast where we explore the connections between teaching, leadership, and system-level transformation.

I'm your host Geetika, and today's episode is going to feel a little uncomfortable but necessary.

We're talking about something we all experience in schools something routine, something familiar

But something we rarely question.

Assemblies.

The Reality We Don’t Talk About

Every week, hundreds of students walk into school halls.

They sit in rows. They face forward.

And for 20, 30 sometimes even 40 minutes they listen.

Or at least we hope they do.

We call it assembly.

We say it builds culture. Values. Community.

But let’s be honest for a moment.

Most assemblies are a monologue masked as meaning.

No interaction.

No student voice.

No real connection.

Just announcements.

Reminders.

Logistics.

And then it ends.

And students walk out unchanged.

The Missed Opportunity

And here’s the part that really matters.

That time?

It could have been something powerful.

It could have been a moment where a student felt seen.

A moment where a quiet voice found courage.

A moment where someone realised I belong here.

But instead

We filled that space with noise.

We missed the chance to connect.

To inspire.

To empower.

And we do it again.

Week after week.

The Hard Question

So here’s the question we need to ask ourselves honestly:

Are assemblies designed to inspire students or to manage them?

Because if it’s just about control, routine, or ticking a box then we’re not using that time well.

But if it’s about identity

Belonging

Voice

Then everything changes.

Rethinking Assemblies

Imagine this instead:

An assembly where students speak not just listen.

Where stories are shared not just slides shown.

Where questions are asked not just answers given.

Where a student walks out thinking:

"That mattered. I mattered."

Because assemblies shouldn’t just inform.

They should transform.

Call to Action

So here’s where we start:

🔹 Let students lead.

🔹 Create space for real voices, real stories.

🔹 Turn assemblies into moments of truth — not routine.

Because leadership in schools isn’t just about systems.

It’s about moments.

And assemblies?

They are one of the most powerful moments we have.

Closing Reflection

One day, students won’t remember every lesson.

They won’t remember every announcement.

But they will remember how school made them feel.

Let’s make sure they didn’t feel invisible.

Thanks for listening.

Until next time, this is Lab to Ed Leadership —

where reflection meets action.
