Attendance Isn’t the Problem -> Belonging Is

Guest: Geetika Goyal

🎯 Let’s Get Real
We’ve been asking the wrong question.
Every day, schools scramble to hit attendance targets -> sending letters, making calls, offering rewards, threatening consequences. Yet, the problem persists: students still don’t show up.

But maybe attendance isn’t the issue.
Maybe it's the evidence of something deeper.

You can’t force someone to return to a space where they feel invisible, unwelcome, or unsafe.

📉 What the Numbers Don’t Tell You
When a student is absent, we often ask:
What’s wrong with them?

But the better question is:
What’s missing from here?

Do students feel:
Connected - to peers, adults, and purpose?
Engaged - in learning that feels relevant and empowering?
Safe - not just physically, but emotionally and culturally?
Affirmed - for who they are, not just what they do?

Too often, school feels more like a place of discipline than development --where identity is corrected instead of celebrated.

🧠 The Human Formula of Attendance
Attendance isn’t about compliance.
It’s about connection.
It’s not a matter of logistics.
It’s a matter of psychological safety.

Students don’t just need to be present.
They need to feel like they matter.
They need to be more than a name on a roll call -> they need to feel seen, heard, and needed.

🔄 So What Needs to Change?
If we truly want students to show up, we must create places worth showing up to. That means reimagining school as a space of belonging, not just instruction.

Here’s where to start:
🤝 Build Deep, Authentic Relationships
Every student should have at least one adult who really knows them -- their strengths, struggles, dreams -- and believes in them unconditionally.

🌍 Create Culturally Responsive Classrooms
Representation isn’t optional -- it’s foundational. Students must see their culture, language, history, and identity reflected and respected.

🎨 Design for Engagement, Not Control
Move beyond "sit down and be quiet."  Prioritize curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Let students co-author their learning.

🧘‍♂️ Prioritize Mental Health as a Core Mission
Wellbeing isn’t extra -- it’s essential. Embed support into the school day. Normalize conversations around stress, anxiety, and healing.

🎤 Amplify Student Voice
Ask students what school feels like. What’s working? What’s alienating? What would make school a space of belonging, not obligation?

🌱 The Bigger Truth
Attendance is a mirror.
It reflects how students experience school -- not just academically, but emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

So we must stop chasing attendance…
…and start cultivating belonging.
Because when students feel like they matter,
they don’t have to be chased or bribed.
They show up.
They engage.
They thrive.

🔑 Key Takeaway:
Belonging builds connection.
Connection creates commitment.
