From Vision to Validation — Reflecting on AI and Technology in Education

Guest: Geetika Goyal

As an educator and researcher, I’ve spent years exploring how technology influences learning — especially in secondary Science classrooms. One of the key insights I’ve come to is that technology is never a solution in itself. It becomes meaningful only when driven by strong pedagogy, clear purpose, and ethical use.

In 2021, I published my paper, “Fostering Students’ Engagement in the Digital World: Technology – A Boon or a Barrier?”, where I introduced the PTD model—highlighting the interplay of Pedagogical, Disciplinary, and Technological knowledge—to show how meaningful technology use can unlock deeper engagement, digital fluency, and real-world readiness, especially in secondary Science education.

Today, reading the UK Government and Ofsted’s latest AI policy (June 2025), I feel a powerful sense of alignment and validation.

💡 Back then, I highlighted:
The need to measure technology’s impact, not just its presence
Teachers as thoughtful decision-makers, not just tool-users
Building confidence, critical thinking, and digital responsibility in learners
Addressing equity and preparing students for a digital future

📍 Now, Ofsted’s policy echoes these principles:
AI is not judged in isolation, but by its impact on learners
Inspectors focus on how AI is used thoughtfully, not if it’s used
Safeguarding, bias, and data ethics are integral to accountability
No requirement to use AI—but when used, it must serve learners’ best interests

This is more than policy catching up with practice — it’s proof that real educational transformation starts with bold questions, continuous reflection, and prioritising people over platforms.

👩‍🏫 We are all still learning. With clarity, care, and collaboration, we can build an education system that prepares learners not just for exams, but for life.
